1. A high degree of pleasure or enjoyment; joy; rapture.
Delight is a word most of us have no trouble using in a sentence. Abba sang about it and coincidentally it’s a family name on my mother’s side several generations back. But when I read Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart,” I tried to imagine what that really meant. I mean, how do you delight yourself in the Lord in a real way?
And then I remembered these three little children. They saw their daddy standing on the other side of the room and their whole beings lit up. It was like Mickey Mouse had walked into the joint. Giggles erupted and their blonde heads bobbed, their arms and legs swinging in wild abandon as they ran to him. He was the goal, the prize. And when they reached him they threw their arms around his legs and clung, delighting in their daddy.
I thought this is the perfect picture of what God meant when he said to delight ourselves in Him. I have to admit that I need more than a little practice.
